Oro House Recovery Centers is proud to offer SMART Recovery Meetings for our clients and the general public in Malibu, California, every Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
What is Smart Recovery?
SMART Recovery is a community of mutual-support recovery groups around the world.
“SMART” stands for “Self-Management And Recovery Training” and it’s an abstinence-based program developed in 1994 to help people with substance use addiction through free support meetings open to the public.
While many of the meetings are for anyone with an addiction to alcohol or drugs, they can also accommodate people with other types of addictive behaviors such as eating disorders or gambling.
Because SMART Recovery encompasses all types of addiction, it focuses on self-empowerment to help others overcome their self-destructive lifestyle and promote a constructive and satisfying life using a 4-point program based on what has shown to be effective through addiction science.
The SMART program teaches coping skills that can be used for both short and long-term recovery by focusing on the present instead of the past, except when used as a learning tool.
The Mission of SMART Recovery is to empower people to achieve their own independence from addiction issues using a science and evidence-based 4-Point Program®.

What are the Goals of the SMART Recovery 4-Point Program?
The SMART Recovery 4-Point Program encourages behavioral change through the following:
- Building and maintaining the motivation to change addictive behaviors
- Coping with the urges to use addictive substances
- Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in an effective way without resorting to addictive behaviors
- Living a balanced, positive, and healthy life in recovery
The program will be familiar to those who have learned cognitive behavioral techniques, because much of the focus relates to thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviors.
Instead of examining past behaviors, the SMART program explores the present and future while developing ways to encourage positive growth and happiness.
The SMART Recovery website provides a wide range of tools and resources, including a meeting locator, a robust online support community, helpful webinars, podcasts, a suggested reading list, and much more.
SMART Recovery Meetings at Oro House in Malibu are open to anyone that’s interested, and there’s no need to RSVP prior to attending. We hope to see you at the next meeting!
